    • McCartneys Chairman John Uffold Meets the Royal Welsh Lady Ambassador, Teleri Jenkins-Davies
Despite some indifferent weather in Builth Wells, McCartneys enjoyed a hugely successful Royal Welsh Show, welcoming hundreds of clients, old and new, to the company’s stand.

It was the first outing of McCartneys’ new exhibition unit, which was well-received by everyone and stood out amongst the crowd.

Among the visitors who popped in for refreshments and a chat over the four days, was the Royal Welsh Lady Ambassador, Teleri Jenkins-Davies, whose role is to promote the importance of farming across Wales and far beyond.

Mrs Jenkins-Davies was greeted by McCartneys’ chairman, John Uffold, who spoke to her about farming issues and the up coming Welsh Winter Fair, at which McCartneys are the auctioneers.

  • Touch Wood for a Quick Sale - Leading Timber Yard on the Market

    • PTP site in Builth Wells
    • The Tanalising equipment at PTP
A thriving timber business, which led the way in its field in Powys, has been put up for sale.

Preserved Timber Products (PTP) in Builth Wells founded in 1972 deals with a whole range of timber products, including fencing materials for agricultural and domestic customers. It was one of the first companies in the area to introduce a pressure treatment process, Tanalising, which enhances the life of wood products by up to 25 years.

Current owner, Theo Marsh, is offering the business for sale as a freehold site comprising approximately 3.3 acres of land which has been in established industrial use since 1865.
The purchase price will include all plant and machinery to include the timber treatment plant, buildings, material handlers and processing equipment to enable the purchaser to continue trading as present.

The business currently has 3 full time employees, some of which have been working there for 15 years. Theo, who’s 64, and his wife, Susan who does the books at PTP, have decided it’s time to retire and so have put the business on the market.

Theo joined the company as manager in 1984 and when the then-owners decided to sell seven years later, he was given first refusal.

“It’s a busy and profitable business with a good reputation and a wide loyal customer base,” commented Theo. “It’s been a great place to work for the last 26 years, but it’s time to take things a bit easier.”

PTP is based at Builth Road in Builth Wells. It’s on the market with McCartneys with a guide price of £425,000.

  • For Sale for the First Time - A Gem with an Unusual Name

    • Gripes Nest - For Sale by Auction
Looking out over her garden in the spring sunshine, Barbara Beamond ponders who might be interested in buying her house.

“Maybe a couple wanting a bit of ‘the Good Life’ or a family wanting to escape from the pressures of the city. It’s a really quiet spot here. You see more deer than people!”

Barbara’s house is indeed in a tranquil spot. Nestled amongst woodland and rolling fields at the end of a private lane just outside the village of Bedstone in Shropshire, many would say the location is, in fact, idyllic.

The property is called Gripes Nest (Barbara has no idea why) and is set in 45 acres. It’s a working farm which, for the first time in its history, is for sale on the open market.

Barbara, who is now in her 60s, and her late husband Alan moved to Gripes Nest with their two young sons 36 years ago - firstly as tenants and then as owners after they bought the property in 1987.

“When the boys were growing up they used to be outside all the time, fishing in the river or playing in the fields,” says Barbara. “I’ll be really sad to leave – it’s a very special place.”

Parts of the house, which has three bedrooms and two reception rooms, date back to the 17th century and it used to be a single storey thatched building.

Barbara kept sheep on some of the land, and there are useful outbuildings and barns near to the house.

“Gripes Nest is a real gem,” commented Jenny Layton of McCartneys, who is selling the property by auction in June. “The setting is truly wonderful and is very much off the beaten track. The house is full of character and the land would make good grazing for livestock, or could just be used for personal enjoyment.”

Gripes Nest, Darkey Dale is being sold by auction at The Baron of Beef, Bucknell on Thursday 24th June at 6pm.

  • HIPs Are History Home Information Packs Are Suspended With Immediate Effect Published 20th May 2010

In an important step at a point of fragile recovery in the housing market, Communities Secretary Eric Pickles and Housing Minister Grant Shapps today announced that with immediate effect, they are suspending the requirement for homeowners to provide a Home Information Pack (HIP) when selling their homes.

Mr Pickles today laid an Order suspending HIPs with immediate effect, pending primary legislation for a permanent abolition. Today's announcement sends a clear message of encouragement to people thinking of selling their home that they can put it on the market with less cost and hassle.

The announcement means that from today sellers will only need to commission an Energy Performance Certificate in order to market their property. The DCLG have issued the updated guidelines regarding Energy Performance Certificates which states that the seller must have commissioned an Energy Performance before the marketing of their property commences and a duty on the Estate Agent to be satsified that the EPC has been commmissioned prior to marketing. There is also a new duty on the seller and their Agent to make reasonable efforts to secure the Energy Performance Certificate within 28 days.

McCartneys have qualified Domestic Energy Assessors who can provide Energy Performance Certificates quickly and efficiently - please contact your local office for further details.
  • Council Buildings Offer Unique Opportunity

    • The former council buildings for sale
Ludlow has its fair share of interesting buildings – and the sale of the former council offices gives someone the unique opportunity to own one or two or even three of them.

The Grade II listed buildings on Corve Street in the town, which include the grand Georgian former gentleman’s residence, Stone House, are being sold by formal tender by McCartneys.

The properties are owned by Shropshire Council and used to be home to the District Council and the South Shropshire Housing Association. One of the properties includes the former council chambers and members’ room.

All three buildings, which can be sold together or separately, can be used as commercial premises or converted for residential use.

“We’re delighted to be selling such a rare portfolio of properties,” commented Wyn Jones of McCartneys. “Buildings like these don’t come on the market in Ludlow very often at all. They all have good sized rooms and outdoor space, including parking, which makes them very desirable.”

The guide price for the properties as a whole is £1,200,000. The closing date for tenders is Friday 7th May.

  • Strong Bids and a Real Buzz at Laura Ashley Auction

    • Bidding on the walnut desk stand which sold for £1100
Huge interest in designer Laura Ashley’s belongings led to fierce bidding at McCartneys’ Antique and Furniture sale in Ludlow.

Bidders in the packed saleroom saw more than 200 lots from the Ashley family home in Powys come under the hammer, after the recent sale of the property.

Interest in the auction was widespread, leading to a number of commission and telephone bids.

“It was a very successful sale, and there was a real buzz in the saleroom,” commented Daniel Fielder, auctioneer and fine art expert at McCartneys. “There were some lovely pieces from the Ashley family home, with many lots exceeding expectations.”

Notable items which sold well included a 19th Century Burr walnut desk stand (pictured), which reached £1100, a set if three sepia engravings by Boydell which sold for £700 and an oak model of a ship’s canon which made £420.

All of the items came from Rhydoldog House near Rhayder, which was the Ashley family home for more than 36 years. It is set in stunning countryside which is said to have inspired the designer’s floral prints.
