  • Three Counties Show, a great day out if you ignored the Weatherman!

    • Clive Roads auctions the NSA Sponsored Sheep Carcasses
    • McCartneys Stand at the Three Counties Show 2011
McCartneys attended the Three Counties Show for the first year this year with our fantastic McCartneys show stand. Although the weatherman had promised us rain we were pleased to see most had braved the weather and were rewarded with a mostly dry weekend and a great show.
We very much enjoyed our weekend at the show and with our professionals on board offering advice and a cup of tea it was a great chance for customers old and new to stop and take a rest with us before enjoying the rest of the day.

It was a proud weekend for McCartneys as one of our Top Auctioneers Clive Roads was auctioneering the Sheep Carcasses sponsored by the NSA, which proved to be a popular and exciting event on Saturday, and there were also many more of our top professionals and auctioneers on hand to take part in what we thought was an excellent show.

Our next show that we will be attending is The Royal Welsh, we look forward to seeing you all, so do please come and say hello !
  • All Records Broken In Cull Cow Section At Brecon Market

A British Blue cow from Mr M & M Hughes of Penrhyn Farm broke all records both regionally and nationally on Friday 24th June by making £2020 and 240.5p/kg while another cows from the same holding weighed 745kg and made £1630.

The market had a full capacity of buyers plus two new men from Northern England and Sheffield, who were keen for well fleshed and well bred cows, The Auctioneer Chris Jones commented ‘Brecon has a reputation for first class stores and so cow buyers are aware those best export type cows should also be available and therefore they are starting to attend on a regular basis from great distances’.

This resulted in strong competition and a record breaking average of £936/head with 24 cows in excess of £1000 with an overall average of 153p/kg which would also be an all time record.

The next sale at our Brecon Market is on Friday 29th July and cows will be listed in the catalogue.
  • At The Top Of Our Game

Wimbledon may be on everyone’s lips at the moment but McCartneys have more exciting news to be talking about with two of our professionals being at the ‘top of their game’ after passing some exciting exams.

Simon Edwards from our Brecon Office has passed the RICS Assessment of Professional Competency and is now a Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), he is now a Chartered Valuation Surveyor and is also a member of the RICS Valuer Registration Scheme specialising in Compulsory Purchase (e.g. road schemes), Valuation (rural, commercial and residential property), Property Management and Access Rights Over Land (e.g. wayleaves, pipelines). Simon covers the areas of Brecknock , Abergavenny and Llandovery and although he is based from our McCartneys Brecon Office Simon does also spend time at our Hay Office.
Simon is currently running a professional advice surgery at Brecon Market on Horse and Cattle sale days where farming clients can have the opportunity to discuss other professional services that they may require from McCartneys.

Simon is not our only McCartneys ‘player’ that we are talking about with Geraint Jones from our Kington Office passing APC in Building Surveying. Geraint is now a Chartered Building Surveyor and a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Geraint is also McCartneys main Commercial EPC assessor and is a valued member of our survey team after joining McCartneys four years ago.
Geraint has gained the expertise in a constantly evolving market to become a Qualified Building Surveyor, allowing him to be at the ‘top of his game’ and keep up to date with what is happening in property and construction today.

McCartneys continues to encourage our ‘team’ to progress in their careers and in turn develop the professional services that we, as a company, offer….
…and just like the players at Wimbledon, we feel a little support goes a very long way!
  • Limousin's put a 'Spring in your Step' at Brecon Spring Sale

    • Temeside Ellie Female Champion 2150gns
    • Reserve Senior Champion Loosebeare Enrico 5,800gns
    • Deri Enzo Senior & Overall Champion 5,000gns
A very solid commercial trade, which raised the bar both in terms of quality and numbers sold, were features of the British Limousin Cattle Society’s Spring Show & Sale held at McCartneys’ Brecon Market on Saturday 14th May, 2011. A record entry set a new benchmark for numbers of bulls and females sold at Brecon as well as setting a new all-breeds centre mark for sales gross. Reflective of the overall positive outlook in the beef industry as a whole, and the predictability and profitability of the Limousin in particular.

Leading an almost exclusively commercial trade at 5,800gns was Loosebeare Enrico exhibited by Messrs EW Quick & Sons, Loosebeare Manor, Zeal Monachorum, Crediton, Devon. Enrico is by the noted sire, Rainbow Simon, and is out of the homebred dam, Loosebeare Sida, a Broadmeadows Cannon granddaughter. Having earlier stood Reserve Senior Champion under Judge Mr Meirion Thomas, Bryn Farm, Nebo, Llanwrst, Conwy, this July 2009 born bull was sold with a Beef Value of LM+32 to E&W Griffiths, Hill House Farm, Norton, Presteigne, Powys. Cementing a good day’s trade, the Quicks sold two further bulls at 3,500 and 3,400gns respectively.

The Supreme Champion Bull, Deri Enzo, described by the Judge as: “a powerful, square-ended bull with very good muscling, mobility and nice character from a tremendous line-up of senior bulls,” made 5,000gns when going under the hammer to GI Francis, The Bryn, Newtown. Deri Enzo is by the senior herd sire, Haltcliffe Blaze, purchased at Carlisle for 6,000gns, and is out of the Sable daughter, Mynach Berys and was consigned by Mr & Mrs TB & CD Griffiths, Brynderi, Llangain, Carms. This was the Deri herd’s first Supreme Championship, having stood Reserve Champion at the corresponding sale last November. Numbering 55 pedigree cows, which run alongside 10 pure Limousins run commercially, the Deri herd was established in 2003 with the purchase of two in-calf heifers from the Cwmpedran prefix and this represented their highest price to date at auction.

Females realised a strong trade and a 98% clearance which saw 33 heifers find homes to average £1,625 – an increase of £227 on the year – with cows and calves averaging £2,835. The top price of 4,000gns was achieved by Mr JG Evans, Lower Ffrydd, Caersws for the nine-year-old Corridan Tania, a Haltcliffe Hercules daughter and out of Corridan Layla, and bred by Corridan Farms, Saxby All Saints, Lincs who was sold suckling her Cloughhead Umpire-sired bull calf, Lowerffrydd Fireball to Mr & Mrs G Hollow, Chytodden Farm, Towednack, St Ives, Cornwall.

The Female Champion, Temeside Ellie, a rising two-year-old heifer by Bearbrook Banker - a son of the Royal Show Burke Trophy winning cow, Ronick Money - and out of the homebred dam, Temeside Billie, made 2,150gns to final bidder JM Richards & Son, Castle Hayle Farm, Hayle, Cornwall when consigned by VAS & TVS Corbett, The Gorther, Felindre, Knighton.
    Averages:
    61 Bulls £3,129.34
    33 Heifers £1,625.27
    9 Cows & Calves £2,835.00
  • Soggy Around the Edges but Still Shining

    • McCartneys Stand Shone at this year\'s NSA Show, Machyllenth.
Despite a damp start to this year’s NSA Show in Machyllenth, McCartneys stood out from the crowd and enjoyed a great day with some of our top auctioneers and advisors present to offer information and advice to old and new faces. With a 440 hectare holding, run as two separate units by brothers Dafydd and John Jones and spread over three consecutive valleys, this year’s NSA show made for a fun and informative day set in beautiful surroundings.

  • Holiday lets will be legally required to have an Energy Performance Certificate from June 2011

    • EPC for Holiday Lets from June 2011
As the result of a recent consultation by Communities and Local Government entitled “Making better use of Energy Performance Certificates and Data” it will from the 30th June 2011 be a legal requirement for holiday let accommodation to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
EPC’s are designed to give an indication of the current energy efficiency of a property and the amount of carbon dioxide that it produces as well suggestions to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the property.
The legislation requires that energy performance certificates are produced for all buildings or parts of a building that are sold, constructed or rented out including holiday lets that are rented out for four months or more in any 12 month period.
EPC’s that are produced for holiday let accommodation will be valid for a 10 year period but a new EPC can be produced at any time if any improvements to the energy efficiency of a property are made.
The new legislation will be being enforced by trading standards and the owners of non exempt holiday let properties that fail to comply to this legislation are liable to be prosecuted, with a potential fine of £200 for each tenant that has rented the property during the period of non compliance.
McCartneys have a trained team of Domestic Energy Surveyors who can produce an EPC for you. For further information or to book an appointment for one of our surveyors to carry out an EPC for you please contact your local McCartneys office.
