Horse Sales

The Horse sales at Brecon Market and the Llanafan and Cwmowen sales are some of the oldest established sales in the County.

The sales developed for the Annual dispersal of foals off the mountain mares which naturally exist on the many hills and common grounds which surround this part of the Country and make up the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Originally the sales revolved around a fair in May and another in November when the foals were traditionally weaned. In the early days when foals represented a significant income to hill farmers there was an abundance of mares kept and bred from, however during recent years due to several factors and market conditions the numbers of breeding mares have fallen and the traditional Section A mares have become more specialist with The Welsh Pony and Cob Society being developed and promoting the breed.

We still conduct the Annual Fairday sales which attract between 500-600 foals to the two main auction sales in October and the main fair in November, however the equine side of the business has now expanded into a monthly catalogued sale which attracts all types of Horses, Foals and breeding stock.

We have special evening sales from May until September on a Friday night, which attracts a great deal of interest for all types.

The auction always commences with tack and equine equipment which is entered on the day of the sale followed by Horses and foals.

Brecon Market would now sell over 1500 horses and ponies annually and offers a modern market with excellent facilities located adjacent to the junction of the A470 and A40 roundabout next to Brecon Town.
