He then worked for approximately 18 months with the Land Service - ADAS - at Guildford Divisional Office and at headquarters in London before being moved to Chelmsford.

John returned to private practice in 1980, working for a short time at Northampton and then moved to McCartneys. For the last twenty years John has been running the livestock market in Ludlow, Shropshire combining practical auctioneering with professional work.

He has always remained involved with the family farming partnership which has bred Texel Sheep for the last twenty five years and also used to have a pedigree flock of Clun Forest sheep.

John is currently Chairman of the Shropshire and North Wales branch of the Livestock Auctioneers Association, representing them nationally on Cattle and Sheep Identification committees. He is also Vice President of the Clun Forest Sheep Breeders Society Ltd. Clive Roads

Clive Roads joined McCartneys in 1983 when the firm took over Worcester Market. Although selling the finished sheep at Ludlow on a Monday he is based at Worcester and is responsible for the day to day running of the office/market and professional matters.

He joined the full partnership in 1989 having been an associate partner for the previous two years. Before joining McCartneys he spent eleven years involved with selling pedigree livestock at a time when major cattle and sheep breeds were first being imported. Over the last ten years this pedigree foundation has come to fruition coupled with the new livestock market situated adjacent to the M5 motorway at Worcester, this combination having attracted many cattle and sheep breed societies to use the facilities for their national and regional sales.

During that period he met and married his wife Sheila, who is also involved in the pedigree livestock business.

Since Young Farmers days Clive has been keen to judge livestock and has been fortunate enough to be invited to judge at the Royal Show and many county and local shows.

He is a keen sportsman, having played representative rugby at county level. He now participates in most field sports in addition to having more than a passing interest in genealogy with his own family tree dating back to 1588.
